tapered plane iron question

Hi- I have a bailey-like #4 plane that I've been using as a scrub plane for a while. I can't say I ever noticed it before, but the plane iron is quite thick at the bevel, maybe 3/16" and tapers in thickness to quite thin at the top of the iron. Have others seen this before on a metal plane?. I do not see other identifying marks on the plane and of course can not be sure that the iron belongs to the plane. I picked it up at a flea market a few years ago.
