cap iron question
You probably have a cap iron from one of the Bailey wood bottom planes, most people call them "transitionals." The term "transitional" is misleading because the wood bottom planes were introduced to the market five years after the Bailey metal planes.
If your plane is an old Stanley, most collectors or dealers would probably have a few of the cap irons you're looking for laying around. I don't know where you are but Walt Quadrato at http://www.brasscityrecords.com/51.html or Sandy Moss at http://www.sydnassloot.com/ are reputable dealers who have fair prices. You could also get a new cap iron from Ron Hock or Lie-Nielsen. Make sure you tell the sales person at Lie-Nielsen the cap iron is for an old Stanley.
