Mahogany for Plane?
I would think that Mahogany would be too soft to make a handplane from, but I have a wonderful 3 X 3 chunk that "sizewise" would make a wonderful Jack Plane. I have Ipe, PurpleHeart and Lignum Vitae that I could easily use for a 1/4" full sole.
So that's the question. If I sole the bottom with something strong and durable, do you think mahogany can take the rest of the stresses put on a hand plane (e.g. bedding the iron, planing fussy grained wood, etc.)?
I am definitely interested in anyone's experienced input. Thanks in advance.
